Bento Friday: Doraemon in His Original Yellow Color and Cat Ears

Happy Bento Friday! Today’s bento features one of my favorite shows from childhood: Doraemon.
And it is not in the normal blue color we commonly see, it’s yellow Doraemon with cat ears!

Bento source: hirunori

How handsome! I love yellow Doraemon!
Did you know that Doraemon’s original color was yellow? The official story tells that Doraemon used to be yellow, as all of the other mass-produced cat robots of his model were. After his ears were bitten off by rats, he was so depressed that his cat ears and his golden plating fell off.  (There has been a few retcons in the past, a feature film 2112 Birth of Doraemon (1995) shows him drinking “sadness potion” after robot rats bit of his ears, which turned him blue).

Which Doraemon do you prefer?

I selected a couple of other yellow Doraemon bentos for today.
Here is an adorable, looong yellow Doraemon omurice.

Doraemon blows a kiss 😳

All of them are adorable! Yellow Doraemon rocks!

Enjoy your weekend!

Watch this Nissin Cup Noodle Transformer Robot Dance and Sing!

Happy 4th ofJuly! Is everyone having a great time today? For people who celebrate United States’s Independence Day, this is the day you’d want to feel happy and cheery. Catch up on shopping at Rinkya if you haven’t done so recently! Or maybe read some of Rinkya’s Buzzfeed posts for fun read.

Today I’m going to show you fun video clips of NISSIN Cup Noodle Robot Timer!

Here’s our buddy, NISSIN 40th Anniversary Cup Noodle Robot Timer.
It’s basically a ramen noodle transformer that’ll make your 3-minutes wait for ramen more enjoyable.
Watch the following video to see its dance and talk! It transforms, dances, gives you a fortune of the day, tells you about ramen trivia and ramen idioms.

Indeed, it works very hard to keep us entertained for 3 minutes!
For people who can’t view the video, here’s the transformation’s before and after.

So adorable, isn’t it?
NISSIN celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011, and this was one of the prizes for their lottery campaign. Only 10,000 lucky winners were able to adopt the robots!
Bid on NISSIN Cup Noodle Robot Timer 40th Anniversary Edition!

But wait, there’s more! In the following year, 2012, NISSIN did another birthday campaign.
This time, they had Cup Noodle Robot Timer Trio: Soy Flavor, Curry Flavor, and Seafood Flavor.

Each of the three flavors has different characteristics. The Soy Flavor Cup Noodle Robot Timer has an ability to play rock-paper-scissors with you. The Curry Flavor Cup Noodle Robot Timer is a hard-boiled guy (see the mustache?) with bold and fun personality. The Seafood Flavor Cup Noodle Robot Timer is a pretty lady with gentle personality.
Watch all three of them perform a dance and talk at the same time!

If I have all three of them, I’ll just play with them one by one, and my noodle will probably be very soggy afterward… 😛
Browse on Yahoo Japan Auction for all listings of NISSIN Cup Noodle Robot Timer Trio: Regular, Curry, and Seafood! Find the one you like and bid on it!

*Each listing usually only sells one of the three robots, not all three in a set, so be aware of that!

80’s independent short film Creamy Mami + L-Gaim crossover ‘Pony Metal U-Gaim’ and its related items

Today I’m going to feature a sort of odd item, Pony Metal U-Gaim.
Pony Metal U-Gaim is an independent short film made in 1988, which was a parody of mahou shoujo anime Creamy Mami and robot anime Heavey Metal L-Gaim crossover. If you get to know even a little bit about Japanese anime, you realize people love to combine robots and cute girls in a single universe. That’s what exactly people thought in the time of Creamy Mami and L-Gaim too!

Directed and created by a group of young and talented animators of the time (big names in present day), this short film ended up to be an extremely high-quality piece.

It is quite amazing, as if everything great about late 80’s anime is represented in it.
Artists involved in the project include Kazuaki Mouri (known for genga Ideon, Samurai Trooper, Pastel Yuumi), Yamashita Ikuto (mecha design Evangelion), Hiroyuki Okiura (genga  SPT Layzner, AKIRA, director Jin-Roh), and various other artists from animation studio Anime R.

It is unfortunate that U-Gaim didn’t get made into an actual TV show or an OVA due to copyrights conflicts, but some merchandise and doujinshi came out of this short film.

Pony Metal U-Gaim 1/6-scale Garage Kit
Comes with a pair of decals for eye parts.

If you like Creamy Mami and L-Gaim, this would be a perfect crossover. Let’s hope some day it will make a comeback!

It’s Mickey Mouse Transformer! Chogokin King Robot Mecha Mickey and his Friends

Tmashii Nations, Bandai’s collectible toy brand, presents an innovative and unique robot in collaboration with Disney’s most celebrated character: Mickey Mouse.

disneychogokin2 disneychogokin

Chogokin Chogattai King Robot Mickey & Friends are 7 individual character figures that can be transformed and combined to form a one giant robot. The team members are: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, and Steamboat Willie.

When you look close, you can see intricate details they put in making them.
For example, inside mecha Mickey’s eyes you can actually see a small Mickey Mouse piloting the robot… sweet!

They even made a really cool promotional video to go with it. It’s worth watching just for the transformation sequence.

Chogokin King Robot Mickey & Friends will start selling tomorrow (March 30th), but you can start pre-ordering from our Rinkya Store now!
