Are you collecting all Rinkya Japanese flashcards? Great! Today we are going to learn how to express prohibition with “~tewa ikemasen.” We use it to state things that are prohibited, or cannot be done. For example:

この部屋では吸ってはいけません。It is forbidden to smoke in this room.
Kono heya dewa sutte wa ikemasen.

The verb that we use is in “~te” form, like an imperative. As you know some verbs have the “~te” form ending in “~de.” So, be careful. This is usually a strong prohibition, and if you see a poster with such sentences, please refrain yourself of doing what’s written you cannot do.
